The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) invites applications for regular faculty positions with the designations: Professor, Reader and Fellow in the broad areas of Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Computational Biology and Theoretical Computer Science.

Emoluments and benefits

  1. Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) is among the best available at academic institutions in India and follow central government scales.
  2. A House Rent Allowance (HRA) is paid if Institute accommodation is not used or is unavailable.
  3. Offcampus accommodation is provided to faculty members, subject to availability.
  4. Additional allowances as applicable are also part of the salary package.

Required Qualification

The minimum qualification for an entry-level faculty position is a doctoral. degree in any of the broad areas listed above or closely allied ones. Candidates should have 2-6 years of post doctoral experience. Suitability for positions at higher levels is determined by their academic profile and the quality of the applicants’ research and, including years of research experience following their doctorate.

  1. Curriculum Vitae, nationality, including date of birth, postal and email correspondence addresses, current affiliation, and a list of publications,
  2. A detailed description of current research interests,
  3. Names, addresses, and email address of three academic referees. Candidates should request these referees to send their letters of recommendation in confidence directly to the director at the address below.
  4. A concise outline of a planned course of research over a 3-5 year period,
  5. Any other material the applicant feels is relevant to the application (eg. a brief teaching statement, industrial research experience, etc. ).

Selection Procedure

  1. Candidates will be expected to have acquired some reasonable measure of international recognition.
  2. At a suitable stage, following a pre-screening step that identifies strong applications of interest to specific groups, independent input regarding these will be sought from an international group of referees with specific expertise in the areas of research of short-listed applicants. Their research will be evaluated in terms of its creativity and originality.
  3. Such applicants may be asked to visit and spend time in IMSc as part of the application process. During such visits, the applicant will typically be asked to give a seminar, as well as have individual meetings with several Institute members.

  1. The Institute reserves the right to consider to fill or not to fill positions in any of the listed areas of its research, depending on the quality of applications it receives.
  2. The Institute reserves the right to pre-screen candidates and to process only those applications further that are found suitable. Fulfilling the minimum eligibility criteria does not automatically imply that the applicant will be short-listed.
  3. Travel expenses for visiting Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) as a faculty applicant, from any point within India, will be reimbursable following Institute norms.
