GeoPRISMS (Geodynamic Processes at Rifting and Subducting Margins) Program explores the coupled geodynamics, earth surface processes, and climate interfaces that build and vary continental margins over a wide range of timescales. These interfaces cross the shoreline and have applications to edge evolution and dynamics, construction of stratigraphic architecture, accumulation of economic resources, and associated geologic hazards and environmental management.

GeoPRISMS Program consist of two broadly integrated science initiatives (Subduction Cycles and Deformation and Rift Initiation and Evolution), associated by five central scientific topics and themes, where transformative advances are likely to occur in the decade 2011-2020, and where a dedicated scientific program could be more effective. These primary science topics include:

  • Origin and evolution of continental crust;
  • Fluids, magmas and their interactions;
  • Climate-surface-tectonics feedbacks;
  • Geochemical cycles;
  • Plate boundary deformation and geodynamics.

Each of the inventiveness has identified key sites for dedicated studies, as well as thematic studies that will balance primary site studies.

Eligibility criteria for submitting proposals:

  • Universities and Colleges: Universities and two and four year colleges (including community colleges) recognized in, and having a campus situated in, the USA acting on behalf of their faculty members. Such organizations also are referred to as academic institutions.
  • Non-profit, non-academic organizations: Independent museums, observatories, research labs, professional societies and similar organizations in the U.S. associated with educational or research activities.
  • Other Federal Agencies and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs): Contact the appropriate program before preparing a proposal for submission.
  • Who May Serve as PI: Only PIs employed by the types of institutions described above may apply.
  • Limit on Number of Proposals per Organization: There are no restrictions or limits.
