Internship/Master Thesis Project: Astronomical all-sky data analysis 1233 views

The Empirical Inference Department together with the Optics and Sensing Laboratory at Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems are looking for a student (m/f/d) to join a project in astronomical all-sky data analysis using methods of machine learning and causal modeling. This project is suitable for a longer internship or for a Master’s thesis.

About the job:
  • The project will operate a setup based on a Raspberry Pi and a cooled astronomic CMOS camera.
  • It features a high- quality fish-eye lens producing high resolution images of the entire sky.
  • The setup produces hundreds of sky images per night, allowing to generate large scale datasets of sky images.
  • Methods used will be such as half-sibling regression and consensus ranking methods to build data-driven all-sky models of stationary and transient sources (astronomical and earth-based).
  • An initial contract will be offered for 6 to 9 months.

Requirements:

  • Application is open to a motivated student with a keen interest in astronomy and data analysis.
  • Applicant must have background in computer science, physics, astronomy or mathematics as well as strong academic performances in relevant bachelor’s and master’s courses.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English are must.

How to apply

Send application (CV, a short motivational letter, current transcripts of BSc/MSc studies, and other documentation helpful to evaluate your background, if available) in a single PDF file to schoelkopf@tuebingen.mpg.de
