IOCCG (International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group) – CSIR has a Postdoctoral Researcher position vacant in the Ocean Systems and Climate research group in the Natural Resource and Environment Unit. The postdoc will assist in the development of ocean colour algorithms in the Southern Ocean by developing and apply emerging techniques using bio-optical observations to derive information from ocean colour that will allow new insight into Southern Ocean ecosystem function.
Location: CSIR, Cape Town, South Africa
Key responsibilities:
- Collect and analyze unique data set of optical, bio-optical and biogeochemical parameters from the multi-disciplinary and multi-national Antarctic Circumpolar Expedition (ACE)
- Initiate further independent research within the strategic objectives of the current programme.
- Supervise or co-supervise PhD/MSc of students.
- Lead, assist and supervise field data collection and further strategic development.
- Contribute to the writing of numerous reviewed journal publications, of which the successful candidate would be expected to be the lead author of at least two.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- Applicant must hold PhD degree in the bio-optical field
- Applicant must have 1 year of relevant experience of acquiring and processing bio-optical and ocean colour data.
- Applicant must be ready and able to work for extended periods on research vessels at sea (Antarctica, local and international waters)
