Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds grants MD fellowships to exceptional medical students who are prepared to interrupt their studies for at least 10 months and change institution and city to conduct an experimental research project in basic biomedical research.

Duration: 10–12 months (an extension of up to 6 months may be granted)

Fellowship Value: 1150-1600 euros/month; travel allowances to participate in scientific meetings or practical courses.

Timing and selection:

Applications may be submitted at any time, but must reach the foundation at least three months prior to the planned change of location and proposed initiation of the MD fellowship.

Eligibility:

  • MD fellowships are awarded to medical students who want to pursue an experimentally demanding and hypothesis-driven research project in basic biomedical research in a leading laboratory.
  • Applicants must study in Germany, interrupt their studies and change their working place (institution and city) for the entire duration of the MD fellowship, i.e. for a period of at least 10 months.
  • Applicants must not be older than 25 years
  • Applicants are eligible if they gained good or very good marks in the first section of the medical examination and during their subsequent studies.

Application:

  • The entire application, with the project proposal, must be written in English by the applicant personally. Consultation with the scientific supervisor is highly recommended.
  • Submit 2 paper copies of application. In addition, pdf file (as e-mail attachment or on CD) including title and summary of research project must be submitted. Following details must provided:

  • References (up to 5 articles that were published within the last five years by scientific guide at the host institute and scientific guide in Germany

  • Certificates of the first section of the medical examination
  • Letter of recommendation and of acceptance from the scientific guide at the host institute
  • Letter of recommendation from guide at home university.
  • Official confirmation that studies and clinical activities will be interrupted for the duration of the fellowship. This confirmation should be issued by either the office of matriculation or the dean of faculty
