Graduate Students (MS/PhD) in the field environmental engineering, environmental chemistry) at theHelbling Research Group (Cornell University) is recruiting one graduate research assistant at the PhD or MS/PhD level.

Qualifications / Requirements

  1. Successful applicant will have an outstanding academic background in environmental engineering, environmental chemistry, or any related field
  2. Be quickly integrated into a dynamic research group that focuses on the fate and transformation of trace organic contaminants in aquatic systems.
  3. Demonstrated experience in this research area and/or with high-resolution mass spectrometry is preferred.
  4. Successful candidates are expected to be highly motivated, to have good communication skills in oral and written English,
  5. To work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Research Overview

The research position will be focusing on the biotransformation of trace organic contaminants (including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals) performed by wastewater microbial communities. Ideal applicants will have an MS or BS degree in environmental engineering, environmental chemistry, or a related field. The project work will involve field work at wastewater treatment plants around New York State, laboratory experiments, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and data mining/data analysis (in R or a similar environment). Research findings are expected to be presented orally and through peer-reviewed national and international publications.
