National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR): The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was established on July 2, 1999 and is a part of Indian Council of Medical research (ICMR). The Institute was formed by merging the Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy (CJIL Field Unit), Avadi and Institute for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai.
The broad objectives of the organisation cover development of fundamental research in the areas of epidemiology and bio-statistics. Beside that the Institute also aims to develop network between various ICMR and non-ICMR Institutes for epidemiological purposes, and Consultancy.
