Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University PhD programme is open to all students from all over the world. Admission to the PhD programme is competitive.

Number of places: The Graduate School accepts about 35 full-time graduate students per year.

Requirements:

  • The basic requirement for the OIST Graduate Program is that applicant must hold Bachelors, Masters or equivalent degree prior to the admission date.

Fellowship value: OIST will cover the expense for relocation up to the maximum level International: ¥500,000; Domestic:¥250,000

Required Documents:

  • Scanned copies of current academic (grade) transcript and completed degree, BSc/MSc in PDF format.
  • Applicant’s statement (max 400 words) and must address the following points: scientific interests and aspirations and applicant’s hopes to gain from undertaking graduate studies at OIST.
  • Applicants must also submit a passport number and upload a scanned copy of passport photo page. International students must hold a valid passport for travel to Japan.
  • Letters of recommendation: at least 3 and maximum 5 letters are required from appropriate academic referees. The referees will be directly contacted for their letter.\
  • Applicant who wants admission on the basis of a qualification from a university for which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English must provide evidence of TOEFL/IELTS score obtained within the last 2 years.

  • GRE general or specific test scores obtained within the last 2 years.
  • Title and abstract of publications and oral presentations
  • Evidence of achievements

Important Dates

  • Students may submit an application at any time.
  • Shortlisted students will be notified for interview.
  • To arrange travel for particular workshops, applications must be received before certain cut-off dates, which are earlier for students who need a visa to enter Japan.
