PhD position in cell biology at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Bern, Switzerland

Starting spring 2021 for three (03) years

Topic: Characterization of mitochondrial organelle biogenesis using super resolution microscopy

Research Theme: You will use a combination of molecular biology and cell biology approaches to characterize the structure and assembly of the mitochondrial “kinetochore” in situ by ultrastructure expansion microscopy.

We recently established expansion microscopy in the parasite T. brucei demonstrating isotropic expansion of the cell in particular the basal body similar as to what has been described for other cell types and cell structures. Furthermore, we have been able to visualise individual components of the TAC and the kDNA by U-ExM, demonstrating that the TAC/kinetochore region is accessible using this technology.

Fellowship Details

The position is funded for three (03) years with salary according to the rules of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Selected candidate will be integrated in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bern. The Institute of Cell Biology is a lively and collaborative environment with strong focus on microscopic imaging and is equipped with state of the art microscopes.

The position is available starting from January-March of 2021.

Qualifications / Requirements

Applicants hold a Masters degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or related fields with a very strong interest in microscopy and image analysis.
