PhD Fellowship Biogeochemistry: University of Oslo

PhD Research Fellowship in Bio-geochemistry is available at Department of Geo-sciences.

Duration: up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education.

Overview

The PhD candidate will work within the Norwegian Earth System model (NorESM) framework with a focus on the Community Land Model (CLM5, i.e. the LSM of NorESM). The project and the successful candidate will approach the system from a regional scale perspective, working in a community with active collaboration between meteorologists, hydrologists, biologists, and geochemists at UiO to refine the CLM model.

The coupled model system will be applied to quantify the role of anthropogenic nitrogen deposition on soil carbon and vegetation, and leakage of dissolved organic carbon (DOM) and nitrogen to aquatic systems, identifying carbon-climate feedbacks.

The PhD study represents an inter-disciplinary work and will be conducted within the framework of the Centre of Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene (ABGC) at the Faculty of Mathematics and natural sciences, and will be co-supervised at the Departments of Biosciences and Chemistry.

This research will be an integral part of a broader joint ABGC study comprising several other PhD students at the center.

Required Qualification requirements

  1. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in geosciences, biology, chemistry, or a related field.
  2. Applicants must demonstrate experience in working with complex systems through numerical modeling, preferably in the framework of an ESM or a regional climate model.
  3. Experience with an LSM is advantageous.
  4. Applicants must demonstrate good programming skills
  5. All Ph.D. candidates must demonstrate high English language skills. International applicants must document these skills prior to admission to the PhD program by passing one of the following tests with these or better grades:
