PhD in Physical Chemistry, Stockholm University 1895 views

PhD student in Physical Chemistry, the Department of Materials- and Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University. Sweden. The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Natural Sciences is extensively engaged in development of nanoporous materials for catalysis & Solid-State Chemistry focusing on various classes of materials like ceramics & glasses, self-assembled & porous materials, and soft matter. The research work encompasses synthesis, characterisation by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy, NMR studies, modelling with computer simulations of materials with a potential for various applications. Environmental aspects are an important part of the research activities.

Disciplines / Subject areas

The departmental research is focused on developing and using solid-state NMR spectroscopy for structural insights of disordered inorganic materials, such as glasses and porous materials. The announced PhD project is one part of a research program aided by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, involving groups at MMK, Uppsala University, Karolinska Institute, and Gothenburg University. The main aim is to look for new injectable calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) which can be used as next-generation “smart” bone/tooth implants. A balanced design of optimal CPC formulations needs an highly enhanced understanding of by what means and process the precursors interact after incorporation towards the hardened cement.

The present PhD project will address such questions by employing both routine and advanced solid-state NMR techniques for monitoring how the various poorly ordered calcium phosphates react and transform over time and how this process may be tailored by the choice of initial precursor formulations, as well as other parameters, such as pH and temperature.
