PhD Position Numerical Modelling of Plasma Detachment: Numerical modelling of plasma detachment and SOL physics in linear and toroidal geometry at the NWO Utrecht, Netherlands

Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1), PhD

Application Deadline: 18/09/2017 22:00 – UTC

Research Field: Physics

Location: Netherlands

Type Of Contract: Temporary

Hours Per Week: 40

Involved Responsibilities and tasks

1. To develop insight into the processes determining plasma detachment and to gain expertise in the use of the SOLPS-ITER and B2.5-EUNOMIA code suites.
2. To model the hydrogenic species and determine the relevant processes determining their evolution in the MAGNUM-PSI plasma beam.
3. To introduce the same species and processes in tokamak SOL modelling and to determine the electric fields and currents in the tokamak SOL.
4. To determine the modelling predictions for plasma detachment and compare these with measurements from MAGNUM-PSI and tokamaks over a range of different divertor geometries.

Required Qualifications

  1. Enthusiastic and highly talented candidates
  2. Master degree (or an equivalent diploma giving access to doctoral studies) in physics or computational sciences.
  3. Experience in numerical modelling is highly beneficial. Good verbal and written communication skills (in English) are mandatory.

Application
