The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems is offering a PhD position (m/f/d) in the Molecular Biology team with following topic “Antiviral virus particles: generation and mode of action of influenza A virus-derived defective interfering particles”. The position is available in the Bioprocess Engineering Group.

About the position:
  • Applications are open for a biotechnologist to join a team of four highly motivated scientists working in the field of molecular virology, defective interfering particles and vaccine production.
  • Applicant should have a strong interest in molecular biology of viruses and animal cells to conduct a very interdisciplinary thesis merging molecular biology, virology, complex analytics and bioprocess engineering.
  • One of the major research aims of the Bioprocess Engineering Group is the optimization of influenza vaccine manufacturing in bioreactors using animal cells.
  • In the context of the PhD work, both basic and applied research shall be conducted. Specifically, existing technologies and measuring methods ought to be applied, new methods need to be established, and novel approaches for the efficient production of DIPs shall be developed.

Requirements:

  • Applicant to hold above-average Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biology, Biochemistry, or similar
  • Applicant must possess profound theoretical knowledge in molecular biology of animal cells and viruses; methodological competences (optional): cell culture, tissue engineering, real-time RT-qPCR, molecular cloning, transfection and transduction techniques, CRISPR/Cas9 and flow cytometry
  • Applicant should be highly motivated with an interest in basic and applied research. Moreover, a high level of self-initiative, an autonomous and conscientious working style is expected.
