PhD position: Geomagnetism-Project “CORRBAS II” 528 views

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is inviting applications for a PhD position (f/m/x) for Geomagnetism-Project “CORRBAS II”. This position is part of a joint project with the Mathematics Institute of the University of Potsdam. Data-based models (reconstructions) of the past geomagnetic field are powerful tools to study the geodynamo process generating the Earth’s magnetic field or to estimate the past shielding against solar wind and galactic cosmic rays. The project, led by Prof. Matthias Holschneider (University of Potsdam) and Dr. Monika Korte (GFZ), will also include a post-doctoral researcher, and the two project scientists are expected to collaborate closely at both institutes.

Qualifications:
  • Applicant must hold Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Geophysics, Physics or Mathematics
  • Experience or strong interest in statistical methods
  • Strong interest in understanding geological dating and magnetic sediment properties
  • Good command of spoken and written English language
  • Experience with Python or a similar programming language
  • Experience with Linux
