PhD position in Bioprocess Engineering: MPI 1405 views

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems offers a PhD position in the Mathematical Modeling team with following topic “Influenza A virus-derived defective interfering particles: Dynamics in single cells and at the population level”. The position is available in Bioprocess Engineering Group.

About the research:
  • The Bioprocess Engineering Group develops mathematical models to describe animal cell culture-based virus production for vaccination and gene therapy.
  • This includes comprehensive experimental data sets generated in our laboratories addressing virus-host cell interaction at the single cell and the cell population level.
  • In the project planned, the candidate analyzes the information available and explores influenza A virus replication, defective interfering particle (DIP) formation, and DIP/standard virus co-infection in cell cultures using sophisticated mathematical models as well as advanced systems biological tools.

Requirements:

  • Candidate must hold a master’s degree in Biosystems Engineering, Biotechnology, Computational Biology or related engineering and natural science disciplines.
  • Knowledge about model construction, model simulation and model analysis as well as solid experience with programming languages (MATLAB, C++) is appreciated.
  • Candidate must be highly motivated to work efficiently, self-directed and as part of an interdisciplinary team on scientific challenges.
  • Profound theoretical knowledge and programming skills and solid background on the molecular biology of animal cells and viruses
  • Competence in bioprocess engineering and the ability to work in a team, and the ability to present the project and the results in an international environment in English.

Duration: The position is granted for three years with a salary according to the German pay grade (TVöD-Bund); extension is possible.

Applications:

  • Submit application documents (reference number BPE_2020/1 including a CV, employer’s / personal references, and copies of the Master’s and high school certificates) only via e-mail to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Reichl at sek-bpe@mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de.
