PhD positions in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Chemistry
Applications are invited for PhD position from highly motivated student with a background in microbiology and chemistry to develop novel UV-absorbing biomaterials. We are a multi-disciplinary research team based at the Department of Microbiology (David Fewer) and the Department of Chemistry (Alistair King) of the University of Helsinki.
Overview

This research project is currently funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation will be integrated into a Nordforsk Nordic Center of Excellency.
The research project focuses on the biosynthesis of UV-absorbing microbial secondary metabolites with the goal of producing innovative UV-absorbing bio-based materials. This work involves developing cell-based methods for producing a UV-absorbing secondary metabolite in heterologous hosts and methods to produce UV-absorbing biopolymers with innovative applications in the bio-based gel and plastic areas.
The ideal candidate will have a background in molecular cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry or chemistry, a strong interest in microbial secondary metabolite biosynthesis and the development of novel bio-based materials, an excellent study record, a good command of the English language and the capacity to work independently, excellent team working skills and problem solving abilities.
Salary and contract terms:
The starting time is spring 2019. The expected duration of doctoral studies is three years, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research with a possibility for extension up to 4 years.
The salary shall be based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities.
In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The starting salary range will be approx. 2200–2400 euros per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of six months.
