Ph.D. Positions in Polymer Chemistry: ETH Zurich – Ph.D. Positions in Polymer Chemistry at the Polymeric Materials Laboratory in the Materials Department of ETH Zurich.

Number of Positions:  Two.

Description

The group focuses on the development of new methods for the synthesis of smart polymers and polymeric nanomaterials. We routinely exploit controlled radical polymerization and other strategies to produce polymeric materials with controlled architecture, molecular weight, dispersity and functionality. We subsequently seek to understand the self-assembly of polymeric materials into nanostructures where all properties can be controlled (e.g. size, shape, surface, core). Key to our strategy is to understand the fundamentals of polymerization mechanisms and allow facile access to the production of well-defined polymeric (nano)materials.

Research Domain:

The research related to the doctorate positions will deal with polymer synthesis and characterization by controlled radical polymerization and other techniques.

The main focus is to:

  1. Improve existing methodologies to synthesize complex materials ( ATRP, RAFT, emulsion polymerization),
  2. Understand the underlying mechanism of these polymerization systems
  3. Translate the knowledge obtained to synthesize sequence- and dispersity-controlled polymers.

Additionally, new strategies will be developed to reverse the controlled radical polymerization and produce monomers from functional polymers. The recycled monomers will be used to reproduce the original polymers with improved properties or to synthesize new polymers and polymeric nano-materials.

Duration: Fully funded for four years (extendable) with a competitive salary according to ETH standards.

Note: The starting date is late 2021 or early 2022 (upon agreement).

Deadline: Applications are considered on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is found.

Requirements / Qualifications

  1. Exceptional candidates with an M.Sc. degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Material Science, or related area
  2. Strong background in Polymer Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
  3. Previous experience and knowledge in ATRP, RAFT, emulsion polymerization, organic synthesis, and polymer characterization (will be an advantage but not a must).
  4. Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English.

We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents:

  1. A curriculum vitae including contact information of three referees
  2. A letter that clearly demonstrates your motivation and suitability for the position
  3. Full transcripts of your Bachelor and Master degree (or equivalent)
  4. Publications (if any)
