PhD or Postdoc Opening for Nano- and Microstructuring of Electrodes of High-density CMOS Microelectrode Array Systems, ETH Zurich

The Bio Engineering Laboratory at the Department Biosystems Science and Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student or Postdoc with expertise in nano- or microtechnological facbrication, who will want to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment in Basel, Switzerland.

Project Description

In the framework of an SNF-funded project, arrays of thousands of nano- and/or micro-scale-structured electrodes need to be developed that enable intracellular or “in-cell” access to neuronal signals.

The overall platform will consist of a sophisticated CMOS microelectrode-array system that includes, besides the specific electrode structures, all circuitry that is needed to (i) record and condition neuronal signals and (ii) stimulate and potentially electroporate neuronal cells.

Requirements / Qualifications

  1. Should have a solid background in nano- and microengineering, and experience in cleanroom fabrication processes is mandatory.
  2. Programming skills and knowledge of simulation tools and Labview are important assets.
  3. The project is highly interdisciplinary (microtechnology/electronics/biology)
  4. Good communication skills and a proactive work attitude.
  5. Postdocs will also be involved in project management and acquisition of national and international grants.

Duration: The position is planned for 4 years (PhD) or 2-3 years (Postdoc).
