Europe PhD fellowships FCT open for international students

The 2024 Call for PhD Scholarships aims to support researchers, in all areas of knowledge, who wish to develop research work leading to a PhD degree.

Scholarships support graduates who comply with the requirements to apply for PhD studies and wish to carry out research towards this degree.

Overview

Research activities may be carried out in any environment of production and dissemination of knowledge, national or international, including higher education institutions, R&D units, Associated Laboratories, Collaborative Laboratories, Technological Interface Centres, State Laboratories and other public research institutions, hospitals and healthcare units, other Public Administration entities or private non-profit institutions developing R&D activities, companies acknowledged for their scientific interest or consortia that includes any of the mentioned institutions.

The work plan may be entirely or partially carried

The work programme may be entirely or partially carried out in a national institution (national or mixed scholarships, respectively), or in a foreign institution (overseas scholarships). For mixed scholarships, the period of the work programme that takes place in a foreign institution cannot exceed a total of two years.

As a rule, scholarships are annual, and have a maximum duration of four years. No scholarships are granted for periods of less than three consecutive months.

Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) aims to support graduates who wish to pursue research leading to a doctoral degree and post-doctoral researchers wishing to pursue cutting-edge research projects at Portuguese or foreign research centres. This call is open to both Portuguese and all foreign applicants, across all fields of research.

Who Can Apply

Portuguese citizens, citizens of EU member states and citizens from third-party states, stateless citizens and citizens beneficiaries of political refugee status.

Applicants need to:

  • Have completed a Masters degree upon application, or alternatively:
    • Hold a first degree and a highly relevant academic or scientific curriculum, acknowledged by the legally capable scientific body of the university where the applicant wishes to be admitted, attesting to the applicant’s ability to carry out studies leading to a PhD degree;
    • Hold an acknowledged academic, scientific or professional curriculum attesting to the applicant’s capacity to carry out studies leading to a PhD degree, provided by the legally capable scientific body of the university where the applicant wishes to be admitted.
  • Not have held any prior FCT-funded PhD or PhD in Companies scholarship of any duration.

Funding

Selected applicants will be awarded monthly stipends and supplementary support, which may include tuition fees, relocation costs, travel awards and health insurance, whenever applicable, as detailed in the Regulations.
