The Vascular Pathophysiology Lab Headed by Prof. Sandip Kanse, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oslo invites applications for a 3-4 year position Research Fellowship as a PhD candidate in protein biochemistry.

About the project:
  • This group focusses on understanding the role of proteases in cardiovascular diseases such as thrombosis and stroke using biochemical, cellular and molecular techniques and in vivo mouse models.
  • The selected candidate will work on a project that is related to the structural analysis of proteases in blood using x-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy.
  • The main activities will consist of expression recombinant proteins and their purification, designing and expressing mutants and testing them in relevant assays.
  • The aim is to understand activation and inhibition mechanisms of proteases at an atomic level.
  • The project will be done in collaboration with the Oslo Structure Biology group

Qualification:

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Biochemistry or related science. A Master’s degree (120 ECTS) minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) according to the Norwegian system or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS
  • Background and experience in some of the following areas is required: Large scale expression of recombinant proteins in bacteria or eukaryotic cells.
  • Protein purification using FPLC and other techniques.
  • Design and construction of plasmids and mutagenesis.
  • Methods related to determination of protein structure and function. Enzymology.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
