The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) invites application for PhD Student in Atmospheric Science for the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry.
Tasks and duties:
- The PhD project will be centered on the understanding of new particle formation using chemical ionization mass spectrometry and the CLOUD chamber at CERN.
- The development of, characterize, operate and calibrate an online mass spectrometer equipped with a new inlet for the simultaneous measurements of particulate and gaseous components on a molecular level.
- The selected candidate will prepare for and participate in the CLOUD experiments. This involves the development of the experimental run plan, instrument operation and maintenance and the operation of the CLOUD chamber.
- The selected candidate will attend twice a year workshops for the analysis of the complex data-sets from CLOUD.
Requirements:
- Applicant must have higher education in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or a related field
- Applicant must have ability to produce data under supervision and capability of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas; communicate the outcome of research
- Applicant must have good interpersonal skills, team player (ability to work with a large consortium)
- Applicant must possess good knowledge of English (written and spoken)
