PhD Student: Materials Science, IMS Engineering Materials
PhD student position in Materials Science, department of Industrial and Materials (IMS Engineering Materials), Chalmers University of Technology
Project: “Material characteristics in welding processes and local heating events”.
Tasks Involved
The PhD project is focused on
- Experimental work to characterize how the mechanical behavior and microstructure of railway wheel and rail steels develop when exposed to cyclic thermal and mechanical loading.
- Physical phenomena occurring on repair welding by AM, grinding and other short-term local heating events (e.g. due to emergency braking).
- Access to modern equipment for biaxial mechanical testing with induction heating, and microstructure characterization
- The material behavior will be modelled and implemented in computations in a parallel Charmec research project: “Numerical simulations of welding and high temperature processes”.
Required Qualifications
- Master of Science in mechanical engineering, materials engineering or applied physics with emphasis on materials technology or similar.
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20180463 (English). The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:
