PhD Student: Materials Science, IMS Engineering Materials

PhD student position in Materials Science, department of Industrial and Materials (IMS Engineering Materials), Chalmers University of Technology

Project: “Material characteristics in welding processes and local heating events”.

Tasks Involved

The PhD project is focused on

  1. Experimental work to characterize how the mechanical behavior and microstructure of railway wheel and rail steels develop when exposed to cyclic thermal and mechanical loading.
  2. Physical phenomena occurring on repair welding by AM, grinding and other short-term local heating events (e.g. due to emergency braking).
  3. Access to modern equipment for biaxial mechanical testing with induction heating, and microstructure characterization
  4. The material behavior will be modelled and implemented in computations in a parallel Charmec research project: “Numerical simulations of welding and high temperature processes”.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master of Science in mechanical engineering, materials engineering or applied physics with emphasis on materials technology or similar.
  2. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

Application procedure

The application should be marked with Ref 20180463 (English). The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:

  1. CV: (Please name the document: CV, Family name, Ref. number)
    • CV
    • Other, for example previous employments or leadership qualifications and positions of trust.
    • Two (02) references that we can contact.
  2. Personal letter: (Please name the document as: Personal letter, Family name, Ref. number)
    • 1-3 pages where you introduce yourself and present your qualifications.
    • Previous research fields and main research results.
    • Future goals and research focus. Are there any specific projects and research issues you are primarily interested in?
  3. Other documents:
    • Copies of bachelor and/or master’s thesis.
    • Attested copies and transcripts of completed education, grades and other certificates, eg. TOEFL test results.
