Overview:

As part of an active EPSRC Prosperity Partnership Programme, involving a collaboration between GlaxoSmithKline and the Universities of Nottingham and Strathclyde,  we are offering a 48-month PhD studentship in the development and mechanistic investigation of novel catalytic reactions for the synthesis of target molecules relevant to the pharmaceutical and related industries.

  1. This project will involve the investigation of state of the art chemical reactions and catalytic systems using advanced spectroscopy, modelling and theory, this project will be supervised by Pete Licence and Mike George.
  2. This project will be hosted by the school of Chemistry in Nottingham and you will work in laboratories spanning the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory and facilities based on University Park.
  3. As a core project within this Prosperity Partnership this project will involve collaboration with scientists at GlaxoSmithKline and the University of Strathclyde.

Qualification requirements:

  1. This studentship is available in October 2020, funded through a stipend covering PhD tuition fees (at the Home/EU rate) and a tax-free living allowance (currently £15,009 per annum, increasing annually), pro-rata for part-time study.
  2. The student will gain expertise in organic synthesis and catalysis, and acquire skills in problem solving, spectroscopic analysis and scientific communication.
  3. For more info: Licence@nottingham.ac.ukand Mike.George@nottingham.ac.uk

How to Apply:

  1. Applications are invited from outstanding EU/UK students holding a good undergraduate degree and Masters-level qualification in Chemistry.
  2. You will have experience in conducting original research in organic synthesis.
  3. In the first instance, please send a cover letter and CV to both: Licence@nottingham.ac.ukand Mike.George@nottingham.ac.uk
