PhD studentship: Space Physics: PhD studentship: Space Physics
Uppsala University is a research-intensive university with a strong international standing.
Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is a government agency that conducts research and postgraduate education in: –
- space physics
- atmospheric physics and
- space technology
It is inviting applications for PhD studentship.
Start of the program: 2nd half of 2019
Duration of the program: 4 years
Funding: The positions would be funded by Swedish National Space Agency and Swedish Research Council.
Type of employment: Full time
Subject Area: Space Physics. The university is looking for students to study fundamental space plasma areas, such as magnetic reconnection sites, shocks, turbulence regions, ionospheres and kinetic processes there.
The topics in consideration are:
- Based on experimental data from the NASA multi-spacecraft MMS mission Characterization of energy conversion and identification of the mechanisms of particle acceleration operating in turbulent layers formed at fronts of plasma jets.
- Understanding of energetic electron generation and electron heating at collision less shocks, in particular resolving the mechanisms of the non-adiabatic processes using MMS data.
- Understanding Saturn’s ionosphere and the influence of the rings on the ionization balance. This would be done using models and data acquired during the Grand Finale of the NASA Cassini mission.
Note: The positions are available at the Uppsala office at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden.
The PhD students will belong to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University and must therefore fulfill all the entry requirements to the university.
