Postdoc Fellowship: Chemistry (Organic Synthesis): University of Bath, UK

Research Associate (RA) in the field of Chemistry for 36 Months Fixed Term (Reference No.: CA5747). An EPSRC-funded postdoc research position is available in the area of new methods for nucleophilic borylation in organic synthesis, within the group of Dr Alexander Cresswell at University of Bath.

Overview

  1. This project is part of a three-way collaboration on “Nucleophilic Alkaline Earth Boryls.
  2. From Conception and Theory to Application” between inorganic (Professor Michael Hill), organic (Dr Alexander Cresswell) and computational (Dr Claire McMullin) groups at the University of Bath.

Project Overview: The research program will develop new methods for the nucleophilic borylation of organic compounds using alkaline earth boryls. This work builds upon the recent discovery that potent and isolable boron nucleophiles are easily generated by heterolytic activation of the B-B bonds of commercially available diboranes e.g. B2pin2 within the coordination sphere of readily accessible organomagnesium complexes.

Tasks Involved:

  1. The position holder will form part of an inorganic/organic/computational team
  2. Work will focus on devising, understanding & applying highly reactive but practicable boryl nucleophiles to the stoichiometric and catalytic synthesis of unprecedented organic and inorganic species.
  3. The position will focus on the application of boryl (pinB) anion nucleophiles in synthetic organic chemistry, including for the nucleophilic C–H borylation of (hetero)arenes.

Requirements / Qualifications

  1. PhD Degree
  2. Previous experience in synthetic organic chemistry, the handling of air-sensitive reagents, and a track record of peer-reviewed publications are essential.

Note: The position is available from 01 April 2018, but the start date can be deferred to 31 July 2018, if necessary.

Application Procedure:

  1. Applications are submitted through the University of Bath online application form.
  2. For informal inquiries, please contact Dr Alexander Cresswell by emailing j.cresswell@bath.ac.uk.
