Postdoc in Bioinorganic and Organometallic chemistry

Postdoctoral Research Associate will be working with Prof Anne-Kathrin Duhme-Klair and Prof Keith Wilson in the Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with Dr Steven Johnson in the Department of Electronic Engineering.

Overview

The project aims to develop modular and recyclable artificial metalloenzymes that combine the reactivity of synthetic organometallic catalysts with the selectivity and biocompatibility of proteins. The project will apply a catch-and-release approach to artificial enzyme design that provides new opportunities for biocatalysis, in particular access to new-to-nature transformations, component recycling and incorporation into continuous flow processes.

The project involves organic ligand synthesis, the synthesis of metal complexes, compound purification and characterisation and the investigation and optimisation of catalytic processes. You will play an important role within a multidisciplinary research team that consists of chemists, biochemists, protein chemists, crystallographers and experts in microfluidics.

Qualifications

  1. A PhD in chemistry or equivalent experience
  2. A proven track-record and excellent skills in organic ligand synthesis, the synthesis of metal complexes and the ability to perform synthesis under an inert atmosphere
  3. Advanced skills in standard purification and characterisation techniques, in particular chromatography
  4. Highly developed communication skills, both orally and in writing, including publication in journals and delivery of presentations at conferences
  5. Proven ability to record, analyse, manage and interpret complex spectroscopic data
  6. Experience and ability in the investigation and optimisation of catalytic processes
  7. Ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines, exhibiting self-initiative
  8. Highly motivated and professional work ethic, with commitment to high quality research, a collaborative ethos and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students

The post is full time (with flexibility) and available from 1 st January 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter, for up to 36 months.

Interview date: 21 November 2019
