Postdoc position: Fundamental Plasma Physics 785 views

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics is inviting applications for a Postdoc position in Fundamental Plasma Physics. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which – like the sun – generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future. The position is limited to duration of one year.

Tasks:
  • research positron confinement in a magnetic dipole trap and the effects of introducing gases, primarily on transport
  • optimization of an experimental control software system (in LabView) and development of a flexible gas handling system
  • co-supervision of a Master’s student

Requirements:

  • Applicant must hold PhD in Experimental Physics or a related field
  • Experience designing and constructing laboratory apparatus for control and confinement of charged particles in magnetic fields (e.g. ultra-high vacuum systems, mechanical and electrical feedthroughs, fast switching of control voltages, etc.)
  • Experience writing and optimizing experimental control software for communication with laboratory instruments in LabVIEW (e.g. power supplies, multimeters, stepper motor controllers, oscilloscopes, etc.)
  • Enthusiasm for basic plasma science experimentation
  • Excellent written and spoken English (the working language of the APEX Collaboration)
