Postdoctoral Associate: Cornell Physics Department 1341 views

Postdoctoral Associate: Cornell Physics Department  – Postdoctoral Scholar or Postdoctoral Associate at the Cornell Laboratroy for Accelorator-Based Sciences and Ed. (CLASSE) at the Cornell Physics Department.

Department / Laboratory: The successful applicant will work with Professor Michael Niemack

Research Topic: Cosmic microwave background (CMB) and sub-millimeter astrophysics measurements.

Opportunities include developing and testing superconducting detector arrays, optical technologies, and analytical tools for the upcoming Simons Observatory and CCAT-prime projects as well as helping to acquire and analyze data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and other observatories.

Research overview: The laboratory is now observing with Advanced ACTPol – a polarization-sensitive instrument on the 6 meter Atacama Cosmology Telescope, northern Chile – which is measuring the CMB polarization across half the sky with unprecedented sensitivity on arcminute angular scales. The lab is cross-correlating these data with optical surveys to characterize galaxy clusters and probe cosmology. The lab is also playing significant roles in developing superconducting detector arrays, microwave optics, survey strategies, and astronomical instrumentation for the upcoming Simons Observatory and CCAT-prime projects, which are both scheduled to achieve first light in 2021. These will include the highest throughput (sub-) millimeter wavelength telescopes ever built and are candidate telescopes for the next generation CMB-S4 project.

Requirements
