Postdoctoral Fellow: Root Phenomics and Simulations 619 views

The Noble Research Institute is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on a new internally funded project, “Virtual plants for real progress in optimizing cropping systems.” This project will focus on using the cropping systems model APSIM to simulate wheat cropping systems in Oklahoma to optimize agronomic and plant parameters, as well use of the functional-structural root system model OpenSimRoot to optimize wheat root systems for nitrogen, phosphorus, and water uptake. Research will be in the Root Phenomics Lab under the direction of Dr. Larry York.

Research Field: Root Phenomics and Simulations

Responsibilities:

  • The successful applicant will be responsible for designing and implementation of experiments primarily in silico, however lab, greenhouse, and field experimentation may be necessary for parameterization and validation of model results.
  • The primary duties and assignments will include parameterizing OpenSimRoot for the wheat root system, parameterize APSIM for historic wheat growth in Noble fields, use OpenSimRoot to optimize cheap root traits and tillering, and use APSIM to optimize crop physiology and agronomy.
  • Other duties of the position will include, but are not limited to, diligent and timely design and implementation of research activities, complete data analysis and interpretation, preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and participation in the Institute’s professional development program.

Qualifications:

  • Applicant to hold PhD degree in Plant Science, Agronomy, Computer Science, Mathematics or related area.
  • Experiences with simulation modeling in the plants sciences, and especially cropping systems or functional-structrual models, will be preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative research atmosphere is required.
