Postdoctoral in Organic Synthetic Chemistry for Environmental Research 2772 views

The Nguyen Group in the Air Quality Research Center at UC Davis is looking a Postdoctoral Fellow with expertise in Organic Synthesis with optional interest and/or experience in Analytical Chemistry. The project is focused on synthesizing chemical compounds that are important for inhalation toxicology and environmental chemistry, to be used as chemical standards and reagents.

  1. The ideal candidate should work well independently and as part of a team, have strong communication, and have enthusiasm for laboratory chemistry research.
  2. The candidate will set up the organic synthesis apparatus and work with the PI to determine synthetic targets and appropriate procedures. The postdoc will be responsible for reading scientific literature, doing the synthetic organic work (synthesizing, purifying, characterizing), and communicating the project findings via presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  3. Training and guidance will be provided for proposal writing, with the option to branch out to other research such as analytical chemistry or physical chemistry – so this position is perfect for someone who wants to make use of their synthetic organic chemistry expertise but also diversify their skillsets for maximum future opportunities. If the postdoc is interested in future careers in teaching, the PI will work with the postdoc to develop a mentoring plan that includes opportunities for formal teaching experience.

The appointment is for one-year, renewable for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field
  2. Experience with organic synthetic chemistry
  3. Experience with extraction and purification techniques
  4. Experience with nuclear magnetic resonance
  5. Strong communication skills and scientific literacy
  6. Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  7. Strong attention to detail, evidenced by prior research.
  8. The following qualifications are desirable, but not required: Experience with analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry, gas or liquid chromatography.
  9. Annual salary of $55,000 – $60,000, commensurate with applicant experience. Full benefits are provided, consistent with UC Davis policy.
