Postdoctoral Scientist: Molecular Biology 938 views

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral scientist position. This is a three-year training and development position for a scholar who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills.

Role and responsibilities:
  • To work within the Group of Dr Kelly Nguyen at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) on a programme investigating molecular mechanism of telomere maintenance in yeast.
  • The project will involve developing biochemical methods to isolate macromolecular complexes involved in this process and visualise them using cryo-electron microscopy.
  • Main duties involves:
  • Development biochemical methods to isolate complexes from yeast.
  • Characterisation of these complexes using a range of biochemical and biophysical assays.
  • Cryo-EM grid preparation, data processing and structural determination of these complexes.
  • In vivo functional studies to validate the structures.
  • To identify, develop and apply a broad range of techniques to pursue the research objectives
  • To present scientific work at seminars within the Laboratory and at external meetings.
  • To contribute to Laboratory-wide discussions on developments within the field.
  • To draft scientific papers, and contribute to the overall preparation of research for publication.
  • To contribute to the LMB’s mission in the public engagement of science, and the translation of research findings into improvements in health care.
  • To assist in the training of PhD Students and other members of the LMB.

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must hold a PhD in Molecular Biology or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of and ability to perform techniques relevant to the project. Particularly useful would be experience in molecular biology, protein/nucleic acid biochemistry, protein expression and purification, structural biology (either X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy).
  • Experience in yeast genetics, cell biology, eukaryotic cell cultures.
