Presidential Fellowship is backed by the President of the University and granted by The Graduate School (TGS). This highly competitive award is the most prominent fellowship awarded to graduate students by Northwestern University.

Eligibility & Conditions:
  • Applications are by program nomination only.
  • Students pursuing Doctorate are eligible to be nominated.
  • Doctoral programs may recommend 1 or 2 applicants, depending on size.
  • Programs that may propose 2 students are: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, DGP, Economics, History, IBiS, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, NUIN, Physics & Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.
  • All other doctoral programs may nominate 1 student.
  • At the time of recommendation, applicants should be admitted to candidacy.

Award:

  • 2 years for Doctoral students starting in fall quarter of the award period.
  • Tuition fees (at the TGS 500 rate)
  • Monthly stipend
  • $1000 research award
  • $1000 travel funds
  • Students already supported by external fellowships are awarded an honorary Presidential Fellowship.
  • The honorary Fellowship carries no financial award. The honoree may take part in all activities of the Society of Fellows.

Review Process and Criteria

  • Ability of the applicant to communicate the significance, innovation and impact of the research to broad-field listeners.
  • Scholarly or research achievement at Northwestern in the form of papers/ book /chapters/ review articles/ presentations/ recitals/ lectures.
  • Significant internal and external leadership roles, outreach and interdisciplinary activity.
  • Letters of recommendation indicating academic or research performance and future potential.
  • High academic achievement.
  • Potential for participation in and contribution to the Society of Fellows during the two year fellowship term.
