Research Associate Inorganic Chemistry 1461 views

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate in inorganic chemistry for a research project in the area of asymmetric air-sensitive main-group synthesis and catalysis.

  1. The post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust on a research grant entitled ‘weakly coordinating chiral anions’.
  2. This blue-skies project focuses on asymmetric main-group synthesis and will be launching a new research area.
  3. You will work within a team supervised by Dr. F. Mark Chadwick (chadwickresearch.com).
  4. You will work on devising a synthetic route to new weakly coordinating chiral anions, and their subsequent characterisation and applications.
  5. You will use standard airsensitive Schlenk and glovebox techniques in the synthesis and application of these new species.
  6. You will need to develop enantio-separation protocols to furnish enantiopure products. With enantiopure products in hand, the applications of these new weakly coordination chiral anions will be investigated, including their use in asymmetric catalysis.

 Eligibility Criteria

  1. You must hold a PhD (or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience) in Chemistry.
  2. Experience of synthetic organometallic or main-group chemistry, including the manipulation of air-sensitive compounds (e.g. Schlenk and glovebox techniques) is essential.
  3. Experience in a range of analytical tools including multinuclear NMR, infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy and mass spectrometry is also essential.
  4. Experience in chiral synthesis/catalysis is strongly desirable. Experience in DFT calculations is desirable.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare articles for publication in international peer-reviewed scientific journals is essential.
  6. An ideal candidate would also show evidence of leadership within a laboratory, including mentoring more junior members of a research group.
