The Department of Earth Science (www.uib.no/geo/en) has a vacant temporarary position as Senior engineer/Chief engineer in earthquake data acquisition and seismology.
Notes:
- Depending on the successful candidate’s background this can be either a Senior engineer or a Chief engineer position.
- The position is for a period of 2 years and linked to the project Seismic Monitoring, Myanmar funded by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center.
Work tasks: Major tasks and responsibilities involved during the task –
- To integrate different systems into one, which will require the candidate to have a good understanding of configuration issues as well as strong programming skills.
- Training and undertake basic research to improve observational seismology in Myanmar.
- To improve the automatic data processing of the Norwegian National Seismic Network. This network consists of 34 seismic stations where the data is acquired through the seedlink protocol and the data processing is done through Earthworm.
- Manual data interpretation in both cases is done through SEISAN that is developed at the University of Bergen.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- A Master’s degree in Earthquake Seismology and have the relevant software skills to qualify, or alternatively at least a Master’s degree in computer science.
- Should have experience within earthquake seismology ans acquisition and monitoring of micro-seismic data.
- The successful candidate will have to be familiar with the handling of earthquake seismic data and the running of automatic processing systems such as SeisComp, Earthworm or Antelope. Experience with the programming of an acquisition and processing system should be documented.
- Experience with the Additional experience with the installation and running of seismic stations will be advantageous.
- To provide training and help to develop services within observational seismology, and some experience with the processing of earthquake data is required.
- The candidate is expected to have good written and verbal English skills.
- Further, programming skills and experience with software packages such as SeisComp, Earthworm and Antelope are essential. In particular, teaching experience and previous work within capacity building activities will be advantageous.
- We are searching for a highly qualified and motivated candidate with an ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
