Several PhD positions: Chemistry, Materials Science and MechE 5624 views

The Laboratory for Electrochemical Energy Systems in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich has several open PhD positions in electrochemical energy storage and conversion (generally defined).

About the Project:
  • The group targets challenges related to the development of the new solutions to satisfy the growing demand for energy.
  • The study will involve fundamental processes in solutions, materials and at the electrode-electrolyte interfaces.
  • This fundamental knowledge is applied to the development of new battery materials, electrocatalysts and electrolytes that can deliver improved performance (i.e. charging times, energy, capacity, cycling stability), cost, efficiency and safety.
  • This full-time position offers students an excellent opportunity to delve into energy science and gain deep fundamental knowledge of electrochemical processes and materials chemistry.
  • Successful candidates will join inclusive, non-discriminating and supportive working environment that praises scientific curiosity and creativity.
  • Tentative starting date is Winter 2020 or later.

Requirements:

  • Candidate should have a Master’s degree (or being close to its completion) in Chemistry, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Nanoscience or related disciplines and has strong experimental background.
  • Candidates must be self-driven and highly motivated, creative and excited to work in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Applicant having prior experience in (i) synthetic organic chemistry and/or polymers, (ii) synthesis of ceramics and/or nanoparticles, (iii) catalysis and/or electrochemistry, or (iv) synchrotron facilities and/or other in-situ characterization techniques is beneficial but not prerequisite.

Applications:

Apply online and include the following:

  • Cover letter with a short description of your research achievements and research interests
  • Detailed CV
  • Transcripts of all degrees (English)
  • Names and contact information of at least 2 references
  • Representative published research work (papers, thesis if possible) (optional)
