Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is inviting applications for Short-Term fellowships for duration of Three months. Fellowships usually begin about two months after notification of acceptance.

About the fellowship:
  • The Short-Term Fellowship Program allows selected candidates to come to STRI at any time of the year and is an excellent resource to provide support for graduate students and introduce them to tropical research.
  • Although focused primarily on graduate students, awards are occasionally given to undergraduate and postdoctoral candidates.
  • These fellowships enable selected candidates to work in the tropics and explore research possibilities at STRI.

Eligibility

  • Applications are open to graduate students, undergrads and postdocs.

Fellowship value:

  • Stipend: $1,000/month
  • Research allowance: max. $2000
  • Round-trip coach airfare
  • Partial awards are occasionally given depending on funding availability. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional sources of funding.

Applications:

  • Before submitting a formal application all applicants should consult with STRI scientific staff, who will serve as potential advisors, to confirm that they are willing to supervise and support the proposed project.
  • Proposals without the support of named advisors will not be funded.

A complete application must include the following components, compiled in the following order:

  • Application through SOLAA (Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment system)
  • A non-technical Abstract of not more than 250 words.
  • A research proposal with a narrative of not more than 1,500 words, plus a bibliography that is not included in the word count.
  • A detailed 3-month timetable for the proposed research.
  • Research budget and justification. Do not include airfare and stipend in the research budget.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Copies of most recent academic transcripts (undergraduate or graduate, depending on current academic level).
