TWAS-NRF (National Research Foundation (NRF) offers Postdoctoral Fellowships which are tenable at research institutions in South Africa. The fellowships are awarded to scientists from developing countries (other than South Africa) to enable them to pursue postdoctoral research in the natural sciences. The language of instruction will be English.

Duration: minimum 6 months to maximum 2 years

Fellowship value:

  • travel cost to and from South Africa
  • standard monthly allowance (covering living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance)

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be nationals of a developing country (other than South Africa)
  • Applicant must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in South Africa or any developed country
  • Applicant must have obtained a Doctoral degree in a field of natural sciences
  • Applicant must apply for the fellowship within 5 years of having obtained a PhD degree
  • Applicant must be a regular employee in a developing country (other than South Africa) and hold a research assignment there;
  • Applicant must provide evidence that they will return to their home country on completion of the fellowship
  • Applicant must not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship
  • Applicant must provide an official letter from a host South African institution, department or laboratory and motivation from the applicant’s host
  • Applicant must meet the following requirements of the English Language Proficiency Academic test: IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5); or TOEFL iBIT (min. 20); or Cambridge minimum 58),
  • Applicant must present a detailed research project that must be registered and approved by the host institution and provide a letter of support from the prospective host supervisor
  • Applicant must be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
  • Applicant must provide an official letter of release from their employer to authorize absence for the full duration of the fellowship.
