Two Postdoc: Developmental and Evolutionary Genetics
Two (02) Postdoc positions – Drosophila Genetics at the Developmental and Evolutionary Biology and Genetics Immunobiology and Infection Biology and Medicine in the Jenuwein group at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics, Germany.
Project Description
- Genetic screens for suppressors of position effect variegation (PEV) in Drosophila have been instrumental to identify crucial chromatin regulators that dictate heterochromatin formation.
- Build a Drosophila project team (consisting of 02 Postdocs and one research assistant) to continue an ongoing collaboration with the laboratory of Gunter Reuter (University of Halle/Wittenberg).
- A pipeline has been established in which novel Su(var) mutants were generated by chemical mutagenesis in an isogenic PEV modifier strain (done by the Reuter lab in Halle) and the candidate Su(var) allele is then identified by whole genome sequencing of mutant DNA (done by the Jenuwein lab in Freiburg).
Gunter Reuter has pioneered the isolation and characterization of PEV modifier genes and this new Su(var) screen in Drosophila predicts the presence of around 60 novel Su(var)
Duration: The positions are open immediately and initially funded for two (02) years.
Tasks Involved
- Responsibilities include the mapping of novel Su(var) loci by crossover analyses and CAPS markers, followed by complementation studies to rescue the Su(var)
- Confirmed Su(var) mutants will then be investigated for gene silencing in a variety of PEV modifier strains and for genetic interactions with other known Su(var)
- The characterization of the novel Su(var) factors involves their immunolocalization at Drosophila chromosomes, ChIP mapping and biochemical definition of protein complex formation and/or enzymatic activity.
Required qualifications
- Applicants should have an academic degree in life science plus PhD in chromatin research that documents experience with classical Drosophila
- Candidates must have at least one strong first author publication.
- The ability to work in a team including mentoring of PhD students and good communication skills are expected additional assets.
