Position as PhD Research Fellow (Stipendiat SKO 1017) is available at Department of Chemistry/ Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN). The position is for 4 years (25% teaching duties) in inorganic and materials chemistry in the research group NAFUMA, within the project FOXHOUND. Starting date preferably no later than 1 October 2015. Deadline for application 5 June 2015.

Functional Oxides through Holistic Understanding (FOXHOUND) is a cross disciplinary project within materials science between groups at the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The overall aim of FOXHOUND is to develop new materials and approaches for energy conversion based on functional oxides. The focus for the announced PhD position is characterization of novel oxides, hydride oxides and hydroxides, as well as studies of their defect chemistry and functional characteristics.

Qualification

Candidates for the fellowship will be selected accordingly, and are expected to have relevant expertise and to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The successful candidate should hold a master degree or corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian master degree in inorganic chemistry/ solid state chemistry/ materials science/ physical chemistry/ or structural physics.

The applicants should have documented background and experience in more of the following areas; X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, structure refinement and total scattering analysis, in-situ studies at synchrotron facilities, absorption spectroscopy. Experience with magnetic/electric characterization (PPMS measurements) and MS/thermal analysis is desirable. Experience within inorganic synthesis is advantageous. Background in TEM is helpful. Emphasis will be put on candidate background within X-ray/neutron diffraction in the evaluation of the candidates.

The successful candidate should be willing and able to take on tasks for the benefit of the NAFUMA research group. Further, since the position carries 25% compulsory teaching duties and FOXHOUND is a cross disciplinary project where the candidate will be active in a team of PhD candidates and researchers, personal suitability and co-operation skills will receive special attention in the selection process. Owing to the teaching requirements, priority can be given to applicants being fluent in a Scandinavian language.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
