PhD student position in Chemistry, with specialization in Physical chemistry

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication makes Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 45.000 students, 6,800 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,300 million.

The vacant PhD student position is placed at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory, in the program for Physical chemistry. Our research concerns mainly chemical dynamics artificial photosynthesis and molecular solar cells. We are part of the Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis.

The starting date is September 1, 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description: Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a fundamental type of reaction of great importance in chemistry and biology. During the last decade its role in for example chemical and biological energy conversion, and radical enzyme reactions, has been increasingly recognized. The project concerns mechanistic studies of PCET in synthetic model systems with time-resolved laser spectroscopy and other methods. Through molecular design and careful analysis based on theoretical models we strive for better understanding of the factors that control these reactions (see e.g. Nature Chem. 2015, p. 140-145 ; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014 p. 14039−14051).

The project is conducted in national and international collaboration. See http://www.kemi.uu.se/Research/principal-investigators/leif-hammarström/

Qualifications required:

The applicant must be highly motivated with a strong interest in physical chemistry. The applicant should have a university degree in chemistry, or a related subject, with focus on physical chemistry. An ability to work independently as well as in cross-disciplinary collaboration is important. The applicant should have experience in experimental physical chemistry research, preferably in time-resolved and other spectroscopies. The applicant must have a good working knowledge in oral and written English.

The study time for a PhD student is four years, but since the employment includes teaching (maximum 20%) the employment time will be extended accordingly. For more information about doctoral studies at Uppsala University, see http://www.teknat.uu.se.
Information about the project can be given by Leif Hammarström (email: leif.hammarstrom@kemi.uu.se ).

The application should be written in English and include the following documents in pdf format:

– A personal letter (1-2 pages) with a short personal description, background, motivation for doctoral studies and principal research interests.
– CV, including education, work experience and other qualifications and merits.
– Copy of BSc and MSc reports or corresponding project, if available.
– Signed copies of relevant university degrees and other documents (TOEFL, FELASA etc.)
– Contact information for two reference persons.

You are welcome to submit your application at the latest July 21, 2015, UFV-PA 2015/1894.

We decline offers of recruitment and advertising help. We only accept the application the way described in the advertisement.
