PhD candidate at the Department of Computer and Information Sience within “Epigenetics” at Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Department of Computer and Information Science. The Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (http://www.ntnu.edu/ime) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for one PhD candidate position at the Department of Computer and Information Science (http://www.ntnu.edu/idi).

Information about the department

The Department of Computer and Information Science (IDI) is the largest department in the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, with approx. 140 employees of which the scientific personnel are organized in 5 research groups. The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the Algorithms, HPC and Graphics group (http://www.ntnu.edu/idi/groups/ahg). Further information can be found at the department’s and the group’s web pages.

Work description

The PhD candidate will be a member of the Epi++ project team, which is a multi-disciplinary research project involving IDI and the Department of Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine (DMF), NTNU. The project is using bioinformatics, genomics, and molecular biology techniques to investigate mechanisms of epigenetic inheritance and reprogramming in mammals, and is a collaborative effort between bioinformaticians and molecular biologists. The current position will focus on the molecular biology and genomics aspects of the project; central techniques for the position will be short RNA transfection, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), nuclear run-on, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated DNA editing, and high-throughput sequencing and data analyses. The lab-work will be done at DMF’s state-of-the-art lab facilities.

The appointment is for a term of 3 years without duties. This is a researcher training position aimed at providing promising future researchers the opportunity of academic development in the form of a doctoral degree.

Qualifications A relevant degree at a Master level in Molecular Biology or equivalent with excellent results is required; a minimum requirement is an average grade B as measured in ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) grades. Students in their final stage of completing their Master’s degree are also invited to apply. Additionally, experience in the following techniques is an advantage: siRNA or shRNA transfection, lentiviral shRNA transduction, ChIP, nuclear run-on, CRISPR/Cas9, cell synchronization, or analyses of data from high throughput sequencing.

The PhD fellowship position will be awarded on a competitive basis. Emphasis will be put on personal qualities and potential as a researcher. Documented experience from research projects is an advantage, as are publications in recognized international peer-reviewed scientific journals, presentations at recognized international scientific meetings, and a degree from a reputable university in the field. Proficiency in written and oral English is required. Foreign applicants not having English as native language have to document proficiency in English. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test),
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted),
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Being a member of an interactive and international project team, successful candidates should have strong communication and cooperation skills.
