PhD position in Polymer Chemistry or Material Science, Germany (2015)

Open PhD position on “Responsive polymeric surfaces with controllable underwater adhesion properties” PhD Project funded by EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Programm Horizon 2020 at the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V.

General Information: Adhesion to wet, rough and contaminated surfaces is a formidable challenge. To develop novel strategies for controllable adhesion in wet environments, it is essential to derive inspiration from biological adhesive systems, which have developed manifold adaptations to such conditions over millions of years of evolution. Yet, fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of adhesion in wet environments is still lacking and the design of mature underwater adhesives remains challenging.

Objectives and Key tasks –

Therefore, this strongly cooperative project aims at the synthesis and investigation of physicochemical properties of model stimuli-responsive polymer brushes and robust graft polymer networks. Tight cooperation with other groups within the BioSmartTrainee Project in testing and characterization of adhesion performance and mechanisms is planned.

Qualification Requirements and duties

  • We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a MSc degree in Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry/Physical Chemistry/Material Science.
  • A background in polymerization techniques and surface modification as well as multi-scale measurement techniques will be appreciated.
  • During the PhD, the candidate will visit and carry our research at academic and industrial partner groups within the EU BioSmartTrainee Project to learn new characterization techniques and approaches.
  • A strong motivation for science and proficient written and oral communication skills in English are crucial for the successful completion of this challenging project.
  • You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of chemists and physicists.

Applicants must also satisfy the eligibility requirements for ESR under the EC Horizon 2020 Innovative Training Network Programme; in particular they should be eligible to be appointed as ESR in Germany :

  • To have less than four years research experience after Undergraduate/Masters graduation (this is cumulative research experience and does not include management/industrial or other work experience).
  • To not hold a PhD degree (PhD candidates under 4 years of registration and before completion may apply).
  • To not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to their recruitment.

In case of identical qualifications, preference will be given to severely disabled candidates. The Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V. is committed to providing equal career opportunities for men and women.
