PhD position in Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), Sweden (2015)

PhD Student Position in Space Physics in Uppsala: Applications are invited for a PhD student position to study the performance of electrostatic probes in space plasmas by use of a numerical simulation code and data from such instruments on spacecraft missions, and to apply the results of the simulations to the exploitation of the data from such missions.

General Introduction: The main tools will be a simulation code package and the data from our instruments on various space missions. The main goals are-

  1. to improve understanding of measurement accuracy and the effects of spacecraft-plasma interaction,
  2. use this understanding to study the physical processes in the environments we are investigating.
  3. For the initial studies, the prime concern will be our instrument LAP on the Rosetta spacecraft and the plasma environment of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
  4. Studies involving our instruments on other active space missions, e.g. Swarm and Cluster at Earth and Cassini at Saturn, can come in a later stage of the project.

The position is available at the Uppsala office of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, starting in early 2016 for a total duration of four years.

The PhD student will belong to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University and must therefore fulfill the university requirements. Information on the research education is available athttp://www.physics.uu.se and http://www.teknat.uu.se. Information on research at IRF Uppsala can be found at http://www.irfu.se. The Swedish National Space Board (SNSB) is funding the position.
