PhD programme in Optics & Photonics: KSOP has developed and implemented a novel PhD program in the area of Optics & Photonics. The PhD students are not only part of an excellent research environment but are also trained in a well-balanced and perfectly structured manner.

Eligibility: 

There are two possible pathways of a graduate student within KSOP:

  1. A direct entrance into the Ph.D. program is possible with a suitable masters or diploma degree.
  2. Alternatively, and especially addressing highly talented graduates from international universities, we offer a masters course entitled “M.Sc. in Optics & Photonics”. Candidates for the Ph.D. program are actively recruited from the graduates of the M.Sc. program of the KSOP as well as from other internal and external Masters and Diploma programs.

Due to the excellent research opportunities in Karlsruhe the KSOP looks upon a high number of applications from other national and international universities. The selection of the candidates after application is based on the positive statement of the prospective advisors and approval by the executive board of the KSOP. Ph.D. candidates are either financed from KSOP scholarships or from other financial resources.

Step 1: Inform yourself on the KSOP Research Areas (RA)

In order to apply for the Ph.D. Program in Optics & Photonics, you need to know in which Research Area you would like to work. You can only apply, if your M.Sc. or Diploma degree and your research interests correspond to one of these areas. Each research area combines several institutes of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

 Step 2 – Inform yourself on open positions

In order to find out about open PhD positions at the KIT Institutes that collaborate with KSOP, contact the respective Professors. They are responsible for selecting the research topics that are to be covered.

Step 3 – KSOP Application Form

Finally, to apply, simply fill out the KSOP Application Form and enclose all documents on the KSOP Application Checklist, then send your finished application preferably via e-Mail or alternatively via postal mail to:
