Development of novel bait matrixes to deliver liquid baits targeting the Argentine ant in the agricultural environments. A post-graduate researcher with expertise in analytical chemistry, pesticide analyses, and toxicological study with ants as study organisms is being sought at the Department of Entomology, University of California, Riverside, to work on the development of novel hydrogel-based bait matrixes designed to deliver liquid bait for the control of invasive Argentine ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) populations.Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Entomology, Environmental Toxicology, or Chemistry and have experience in analytical chemistry and pesticide bioassays. Previous experience in synthetic chemistry is preferred, but not required. Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for production and characterization of novel bait matrices, incorporation of attractants and pesticides into bait matrices, analyses of the pesticides contents of bait matrices, analyses of semiochemical concentrations incorporated in bait matrices, and determining the effectiveness of the final bait product with laboratory colonies of Argentine ants.
Active involvement for the field efficacy test of the final bait product will be also encouraged. The successful applicant will work with the Principal Investigators in the design, establishment, and maintenance of laboratory experiments; data collection, entry, and management; insect colony preparation, bioassays; statistical analyses; and possible supervision and training of part-time and summer staff.
The applicant must have high competency in English and a demonstrated ability to write reports and publish scientific manuscripts and to give professional talks in English to growers, pest management processionals, the public, and scientists. Competency in statistical/analytical/quantitative analyses and execution of laboratory / field experiments is expected.
