The aim of this five year ERC-funded project is to use spin qubits defined in carbon nanotube quantum dots to demonstrate measurement-based entanglement in an all-electrical and scalable solid-state architecture.

General Discription: The project makes use of spin-orbit interaction to drive spin rotations in the carbon nanotube host system and hyperfine interaction to store quantum information in the nuclear spin states.

Project title: Research Associate in Carbon Nanotube Quantum Devices

Job reference number: 1524507

Grade: UCL Grade 7

Salary Range: £33,686 – £40,716 per annum

Terms and Conditions: In accordance with the conditions of employment as laid down in the relevant UCL Staff policies

Accountable to: Dr Mark Buitelaar

The project builds on techniques developed by our group for fast and non-invasive read-out of the electron spin qubits using radio-frequency reflectometry and spin-to-charge conversion. Experimental work will involve device fabrication in a cleanroom environment and electrical measurements at low (mK) temperatures, including both dc electron transport and microwave manipulation of individual electrons in carbon nanotubes. The work will be carried out at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) in the group of Dr. Mark Buitelaar in collaboration with a broader network of experimental and theoretical colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities

Perform electrical measurements on carbon nanotube devices at low (mK) temperatures using a dilution refrigerator.

 Fabricate carbon nanotube devices in a cleanroom environment

 Specification, procurement, commissioning and maintenance of instruments, fabrication tools, cryostats and magnets.

 Use of appropriate software (e.g. Matlab) to analyse the data.

 Ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times

 Maintain accurate and complete records of all findings

 Prepare progress reports on research for funding bodies as required

 Prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals

 Prepare invention disclosures and documents related to intellectual property related to the project

 Prepare presentations, including text and images, for delivery by self as well as others

 Travel to meetings both domestically and abroad to discuss results and to learn about related developments elsewhere

 Travel to facilities, both domestic and abroad, to perform experiments related to the research being undertaken

 Contribute to the preparation and drafting of research bids and proposals

 Contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department as required

Contribute to the induction and direction of other research staff and students as requested

 Carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by Dr Buitelaar

 Be responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order

 Maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations at UCL and other facilities to be visited

 Actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies
