OCE Postdoctoral Fellowship in Climate Drivers of Ocean Change at CSIRO, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
CSIRO offers PhD graduates an opportunity to launch their scientific careers through our Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Postdoctoral Fellowships.
CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Flagship is seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual to work with leaders in the field of science and receive personal development and learning opportunities. You will work on research aimed at using both observations of ocean change and coupled climate model simulations to define and detect the effects on the oceans of different external climate forcings in the presence of natural internal variability.
The candidate will work in the following aspects:
- Under the supervision of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO.
- Use ensembles of coupled model output and/or specific model runs to explore and understand the physics and drivers of observed multidecadal ocean change.
- Explore, adapt or expand detection and attribution formalisms to help quantify drivers of change and to better constrain projections of future ocean change and warming rates.
- Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present your work at scientific conferences.
Location: Hobart, Tasmania
Salary: $78K to $88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation (pension fund)

To be successful in this position you will have:
- A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as physical oceanography or climate science, with a strong background and substantial experience in the analysis of global ocean observations and/or model results.
- Demonstrated understanding of the oceans role in climate change and other relevant climate change physical processes.
- Demonstrated experience with computational and statistical methods of climate science and oceanography, in particular the ability to synthesize diverse data sets to aid interpretation and draw conclusions.
- Sophisticated programming skills to analyse large model data sets and compare them rigorously to observations.
Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant full time postdoctoral experience.
