images24 month Postdoc position on development of a laser spectrometer for air borne methane sensing. Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

The Laboratory for Air Pollution/Environmental Technology investi-gates effects of human activity on the atmosphere-climate system as a contribution to a healthy and safe environment by combining state-of-the art measurement techniques and modeling tools.

Laser absorption spectroscopy in the mid-infrared (MIR) combines high selectivity, sensitivity and time response. These features are well matched with the requirements for a compact, open-path methane (CH4) sensor to be deployed on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Drone based measurements are unique for dynamic detection of local-scale gas emissions and thus provide great opportunities for profiling CH4 emissions from a large variety of natural and anthropo-genic sources and for investigating their spatial and temporal variability. In collaboration with ABB Switzerland Ltd we seek significant advances in trace gas sensor design and technology, and aim for the development of a lightweight CH4 sensor to be deployed on UAVs.

Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a PhD in physics or a related discipline, and a thorough background in optics, electronics and laser spectroscopy, as well as a strong interest in instrumental development. Candidates with demonstrated research skills and good publication records will be considered. Fluency in English is required, basic comprehension and oral expression skills in German are desirable.

How to Apply: We are looking forward to your application including a letter of Motivation, CV, transcripts of diplomas, a list of publications and names and addresses of three references.
