A postdoctoral position is available in Arc Modelling of Arc Plasmas, CSIRO – Australia

CSIRO offers PhD graduates an opportunity to launch their scientific careers through our Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Postdoctoral Fellowships. Successful applicants will work with leaders in the field of science and receive personal development and learning opportunities.

This Postdoctoral Fellow will develop computational models of arc plasma processes, using a newly-developed approach to treating plasmas comprising mixtures of three or more gases or vapours. The approach will allow a wide range of important problems to be understood for the first time. The processes to be modelled include arc welding of alloys, mixing of ambient air into arcs, and formation of oxide nanostructures (including welding fume) in arc plasmas.

The candidate will work in the following aspects:

  • Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Develop and run computational models of arc plasma processes and nanostructure formation in arc plasmas. This will require extension and modification of existing Fortran computer codes.
  • Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
  • Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.
  • Prepare appropriate conference papers and present those at conferences as agreed with your supervisor.

Salary:        AUD$81K – AUD$88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as physics, physical chemistry or engineering.
  • Strong record of research in computational modelling of high-temperature and/or ionised gases.
  • Experience in computer programming in a high-level language.
  • Demonstrated capacity to contribute new ideas and develop new approaches in a research program.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.

Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant Postdoctoral experience.
