Postdoc position in Polarized Target Physics, University of Virginia, USA

Research Associate in Polarized Target Physics

The Polarized Target group at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position to start in Summer/Fall of 2015.

Over the course of this appointment the successful candidate will be engaged in our group’s program of studies at Jefferson Lab, where our group plays a leading role in major experiments using polarized targets and in the study of short-range correlations in nuclei.

We are deeply engaged in a polarized Drell-Yan experiment at Fermilab. Our group has a strong program of target physics studies in our polarized target laboratory where we have a 4He evaporation refrigerator working with an 8 T superconducting solenoid. A dilution refrigerator is under development. Polarized materials are tested after irradiation and chemical doping for use in Jefferson Lab experiments and elsewhere.

Opportunities to participate in other related experiments are available. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in the preparation, data collection and analysis phases of one or more of these experiments, and is encouraged to propose new experiments for the energy upgrade at JLAB.

Qualifications: The completion of a Ph.D. degree in Physics by appointment start date is required. Candidates with a background in experimental nuclear or particle physics are preferred. Experience in fabricating and operating solid polarized target and familiarity with cryogenic equipment and procedures, vacuum equipment, and electronic instruments is desired. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be desirable: low temperature physics, cryogenic engineering, NMR, superconducting magnets and devices, RF and microwave systems, and software for point-of-control applications.
This is a one-year appointment however appointments may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments and is contingent upon available funding, satisfactory performance and mutual agreement.

To apply, please submit a candidate profile on-line and attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae and the contact information for three professional references through Jobs@UVA (https://jobs.virginia.edu); search on posting number 0616499.

Review of applications will begin June 24, 2015; however, the position will remain open until filled.
